EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
