Wolff Set to Divest Shareholding Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no comment on this. The management structure of the team will remain unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years as a consequence of the increasing appeal of Formula 1 around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned more than $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
